The Art of Leadership: Lessons from the Stage

Writer: Kate RussellKate Russell

In our latest episode of The Huddle Leadership Podcast, we had the privilege of speaking with Mitchell Butel, the Artistic Director of the State Theatre Company of South Australia. Butel, a seasoned actor, director, and leader, brought a unique perspective to the challenges and triumphs of leadership.

Butel on Connection

Butel shared a compelling analogy between the stage and the boardroom, highlighting the importance of collaboration, communication, and resilience in both realms. "The essential kind of meat of theatre is conflict," he observed, "but you can't really make theatre unless there's a connection between two actors or a connection between one actor and the audience." This emphasis on finding common ground resonates deeply with the collaborative nature of successful leadership.

Delegation and Trust

Another key takeaway was the significance of delegation and trust. As Butel explained, "You have to give over to the people you've chosen because if you become a micromanager of creative people, then you're in trouble." This echoes the importance of empowering team members to contribute their unique perspectives and skills in any organisation.

The conversation also touched on the critical role of feedback in personal and professional growth. Butel shared, "I think the best actors are the ones who are open to feedback because they realise it's a tool for improvement." This sentiment underscores the importance of creating a culture of open communication and continuous learning within organisations.

The Balancing Act

When asked about the challenges of balancing creativity with the demands of running a successful organisation, Butel emphasised the importance of clear communication and goal setting. "It's about finding the right balance between artistic vision and practical considerations," he said. "It's a constant juggling act, but it's also what makes the role so rewarding."

Butel's insights offer valuable lessons for leaders across industries. By understanding the dynamics of a creative environment and the challenges faced by artists, we can gain a deeper appreciation for the complexities of leadership. As Butel aptly put it, "It's not just about talent, it's about people's heart and soul."
