About Mick Nelson Michael ‘Mick’ Nelson is a leading figure in Australian high-performance sport and coaching development. Currently, the AIS Coach Development Lead at SASI, Mick brings over 14 years of international coaching experience to the table. A two-time Olympic coach in Beach Volleyball (Beijing 2008 and London 2012), he achieved his second Olympic coaching role at just 30 years old.


Mick’s coaching resume includes extensive leadership on the FIVB World Tour (2007–2013, 2017–2019), national team coaching at multiple age-group World and Asian Championships, and being named Volleyball Australia Coach of the Year in 2011.


A champion for coach development, Mick has created and delivered national coaching frameworks and led international tours and camps. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Applied Science (Recreation Planning and Management) from UniSA and a Postgraduate Certificate in Sports Coaching from the University of Queensland. He has recently added Motivational Interviewing to his toolkit to support holistic coach growth.

Mick is renowned for his grounded, practical approach and deep insight into what it takes to build high-performing individuals and aligned teams.
